2010 Arizona 7th District - McClung vs. Grijalva

The Seventh District of Arizona is the lineal descendant of a district that was created in 1962.  From 1962 through 1990, it was represented by Mo Udall.  After the Fifth (now the Eighth) district was split off in 1982, the district was made heavily Democratic; no Democrat has ever won less than 59 percent of the vote here.  The district is anchored in western Tucson, but has substantial population enclaves in South Phoenix and Yuma.

The Democrats' domination of the district may change this year.  Representative Raul Grijalva made headlines when he suggested that businesses should boycott the state in response to the law cracking down on illegal immigrants.  Most observers thought that the Democratic nature of the district would insulate Grijalva from any blowback.  But polls have suggested that the race may have tightened, and this race is looking more and more like a tossup.  The Republicans are running 28-year-old physicist Ruth McClung.
